A Day In The Life: Scarborough Family Photography Session
Before I started this new business, I had been a wedding photographer for almost 10 years and decided to take a break when my first daughter was born. I wanted to experience being a new mother, have my weekends back, and enjoy every minute. Little did I know, I wouldn't be returning to the wedding industry. Instead, what started as a simple newborn shoot for my 3-week-old daughter, turned into something that would drastically change how I thought about photographing people.
I felt defeated after trying to organize and photograph my daughter's newborn shoot with all the cute props I had in mind. I barely had enough energy to do my hair, pick out outfits that fit me, and clean up my bedroom enough to make it look somewhat decent. I was exhausted before I started and my daughter was so fussy that, after all that effort, I gave up after 10 minutes. Pretty sure there were some tears involved too because, you know, hormones. I got two great shots and that was enough for me. Thank you, goodbye!
After that experience, I decided to wait a while before attempting to organize another shoot. But realized that I was missing so much while I waited to muster up the courage to do another stylized shoot. So, I decided to bring out my camera every once in a while and take a few un-prompted pictures of my daughter - no pressure, no props, no set-ups, just her being herself so I could capture her growth and small moments I knew I wanted to remember. And oh was I so glad I did.
Today, those images of my daughter are some of my favourite shots I've ever created. They tell an honest and true story of what it felt like to be a new parent. It was hard, frustrating, absolutely exhausting, hilarious, joyous, full of silliness, drool, and everything beautiful about my life at that time. I still smile whenever I see that collection of images.
Documentary photography is supposed to make you feel something. I want you to feel how loved you are as a mom or a dad in my work. I want you to feel how special a normal Saturday or Sunday is with your family. Most importantly, when your kids grow up, they'll look back at these photos and see how you played, tickled, chased, and enjoyed quality time together. They get to see what their childhood was really like. This is my hope for all the wonderful families who choose me to document their everyday.
Now, without further adieu, I'd like to introduce this next family I had the pleasure of working with at the end of April. I photographed this awesome couple's wedding back in 2017 and I was so excited to be a part of this next chapter in their life. We did ALL the things this family loves to do on a typical Sunday morning. From playing blocks to a game of chase to eating ice cream and reading their favourite stories...I had the BEST time capturing this family just being themselves and enjoying time together. This is what a Day In The Life session is all about.
We did take some time to get those traditional sweet family shots with everyone smiling at the camera. But the rest of the time was spent documenting a piece of history for their family. Enjoy!
